How to properly clean teeth

Daily tooth brushing is essential for good oral health. But this is not enough. To properly brush teeth, in addition to a toothbrush with soft bristles and toothpaste with fluoride, we also need to apply the proper angle and technique.

A toothbrush with soft bristles, rounded tips, and a small head that can reach all areas of the teeth and oral cavity is ideal. Soft bristles make it easier to remove plaque from under the gum line, which helps prevent periodontal disease.

Toothbrushes should be replaced every three to four months. Studies have shown that electric toothbrushes with rotary-oscillation technology are more effective in removing plaque than other types of electric or mechanical brushes.

Fluoride in toothpaste helps strengthen the outer layer of the enamel, reducing the risk of tooth decay.

We begin brushing by placing the toothbrush at a 45˚ angle to the gum line, where the teeth meet the gums. We continue with circular motion going over the area of the tooth, the gum line, and the area of the gums near the tooth as plaque tends to accumulate on the lower third of the tooth, next to the gums. We also massage the gums using this method.

After making 10-15 circular movements, we move the toothbrush forward by the length of the brush head and repeat the process on the next part of the teeth. By following this process, we ensure that we clean the teeth from all sides, including the side of the cheeks and that of the tongue. To clean the biting surfaces, use short back-and-forth movements.

Finally, clean the tongue by brushing from the root to the tip of the tongue. You can also put some mouthwash on the tongue. Cleaning the tongue can help remove plaque that causes bad breath and the growth of bacteria.

To maintain good oral health, it’s recommended to clean your teeth at least twice a day. It is important to note that applying excessive force while brushing will not enhance the effectiveness of cleaning, rather, it can lead to gum recession and enamel abrasion.
