Dental implants
The loss of a tooth, whether it be due to accidents, decay, periodontal disease, or poor oral hygiene, can significantly impact our quality of life. Preserving our natural teeth is essential for maintaining overall oral health and well-being.
Dental implants are a reliable and long-lasting solution for replacing missing teeth, allowing you to regain confidence in your smile and live life with ease.
What are the advantages of dental implants?
One of the benefits of dental implants is that they closely resemble natural teeth. They are used to fill the empty space created after a tooth has fallen out or been removed, thereby preventing further bone loss and receding gums.
Additionally, dental implants help to preserve the alignment of the surrounding teeth and promote overall oral health. A dental implant not only restores chewing function, but it can also improve facial appearance. Bone loss can lead to facial changes such as deepened wrinkles around the mouth, thinned lips, and a more prominent chin, making a person look older.
For individuals with multiple missing teeth, a dental bridge can be securely attached to dental implants. A dental implant offers a less invasive option for replacing a missing tooth as it does not require any reduction of the existing teeth, unlike a traditional bridge.
In addition, dental implants can be used to secure dentures in edentulous jaws, improving their function, comfort, and the patient’s confidence.
What is the process for getting dental implants?
We have broken down the process of inserting dental implants into three phases to make it easier to understand. During each of the three phases, your dentist will play an active role to ensure a successful outcome.
The procedure to place dental implants is performed with local anesthesia. It starts by preparing the site for implant placement, which typically involves making an incision in the gum tissue to access the underlying jawbone. The dentist will then create enough space for the implant in the bone using special drills designed for implant placement. When the area for the implant is prepared, the dentist will carefully place the implant into the jawbone and close the incision site with sutures.
The dentist will provide you with instructions for post-operative care and oral hygiene at home. The sutures will be removed 7 to 10 days following the procedure.
Healing and complete fusion of the implant with the bone usually takes two to four months (depending on bone quality). During the healing period, the dentist may provide you with temporary teeth to wear while awaiting the final prosthetic solution.
After three months, the dentist will make a small incision at the implant site. This will allow the attachment of a special screw (i.e. healing cap) to the implant to facilitate soft-tissue healing around the implant. If necessary, the incision site will be closed with sutures. After a week, the stitches will be removed and the implant will be ready for its prosthetic upgrade.
In some instances, the dentist can integrate the healing cap with the implant already during the placement procedure, thereby avoiding the need for additional gum incisions.
Approximately two weeks following the opening of the implant site, the dentist will obtain an image of the implant for the purpose of having a dental technician fabricate the implant’s superstructure and crown.
If the implant demonstrates adequate stability, the technician may immediately fabricate a temporary crown to cover it. This temporary restoration must be replaced with the permanent crown after a period of six months.
